We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves, otherwise, we harden.
(Johann Wolfgang Goethe)
Having addressed the physical benefits associated with conscious breathing, let’s turn our attention to the emotional level. Our emotions are closely linked to our body and mind. A greater amount of oxygen breathed in enables the body to relax, to give itself space; releasing tension and constriction opens the door to the emotional level, contained within the body. From my own experience and that of others who I have helped with their breathing, I have observed that a higher oxygen intake produces a broader and deeper perception of oneself. There we see and hear ourselves as we really are in a way that enables us to understand those inner areas that we are not used to “seeing”, and to calm our inner conflicts. This inner process always occurs, although in different ways and with different levels of intensity and depth. It embraces us, it moves us, it cares for us, it puts us at peace with ourselves, by perceiving (even though it might be uncomfortable) those areas that the mind tends to hide and that we tend not to seek out. By breathing consciously, the emotions are calmed down. Even panic attacks – an invasive phenomenon – are calmed. The result is an increased level of oxygen and relaxation of the body, which produces a genuine and conscious perception of who you really are and of being in control of your real self. All of this is thanks to a more oxygenated body that transforms its chemistry and the related emotions contained therein. I have seen people of different ages and backgrounds with problems of varying degrees, who are unable to express or bring to the surface those parts of themselves that are deemed to be important, people stifled by fear or anger or constricted by highly regimented behaviour, let go of these inner burdens, thus liberating the body, and start really to be themselves. Implementing choices, transformations, and doing in their lives what they feel makes sense to them. The amazement that you feel when you actually succeed, provides the motivation to move ahead, fuelled by the energy released, in fulfilling of your own
deep-seated desire to live your life the way you want, and not to follow the crowd because of a craving for attention and kindness. In this way, thanks to the process of conscious breathing, you can experience the reality of your own existence and the impact of personal choices made in your own way and on your own personal responsibility. We are all flowers that can blossom in the harmony of our natural makeup and in the enhancement of our existence. When, thanks to the oxygen, the emotions that hold back creative urges and human choices are released, the achievements we desire come to fruition producing joy and a will to live. This is the power of conscious breathing when we enhance its capabilities by increasing the amount of oxygen breathed, something that I know all too often is underestimated and taken for granted.
