The primary goal of conscious breathing is to deliver more oxygen to the body. This activity, which is vital for the body (after three minutes without oxygen we cannot survive), brings about a series of positive transformations.  In this article I will show you the physical benefits, as the first step following the order set out in the title. Breathing in more oxygen releases the toxins accumulated in the blood as it circulates through the body. The first effect of releasing toxins is better functioning of the organs, due to a higher level of vitality of the cells that enable the body (of which it is made up) to work more effectively in all its various functions. As a result, at the end of the breathing session, you sense a greater vitality and / or a greater energy level that has been generated by means of the oxygen. When breathing consciously, another transformation takes place in the body; the deeper breathing creates a very pleasant massage for the organs that benefit from both an increased amount of oxygen, and this ‘caressing’ brought about by the breathing. By relaxing, the organs’ functionality is improved as they acquire their natural positioning while working. In addition there is a general relaxation of the muscles, which are always tensed for action, due to lack of time or because of the concerns or frustrations in the person’s life. Thanks to the higher levels of oxygen, the organs and muscles relax, producing a strong sense of well-being that spreads throughout the body, and an increased awareness of the strain that you are placing on your body. In the light of this experience it is possible to change bad habits. Finally, we become aware that we possess a powerful physiological means for achieving physical well-being. After a breathing session even the skeleton undergoes some change, thanks to the extended relaxation; for example, once conscious breathing has begun, the diaphragm and the ribs are able to work in a more correct way with a broader movement that enables you to use your lungs more fully. Hard calves take on the correct consistency, hard stomachs become soft, narrow eyes open, jaws clenched in anger or tension soften changing facial features, with a softened and more joyful expression, high and tense shoulders lower and relax, stiff necks that prevent fluid movement relax acquiring a much wider and pain-free mobility, a tense scalp becomes elastic, night-time sleep improves markedly, and I could go on and on. It offers your body the physical space needed to operate smoothly for two reasons: greater oxygenation and relaxation of its parts, optimising its operation, free from stiffness and tension. For example, without the production of cortisol a substance produced under stress that can damage the body. After about twenty minutes of conscious breathing the body releases instead endorphins that produce physical well-being. Oxygen, available to all, and breathing, a function that takes place unconsciously, are two key elements for our vitality and well-being, and should be raised to the level of consciousness. By practicing conscious breathing in our daily life, we enrich ourselves with a physiological system that improves it, thanks to a greater physical well-being.
